What's New for the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt?

The Chevrolet Bolt EV is the low-cost fully-electric vehicle the world had been waiting for. It brags of more than double the range of most of its rivals but still manages to stay practical and fun. It teams a large-capacity battery pack with a potent electric motor to deliver a realistic 238-mile driving range. Unlike most of its competitors, it can be charged to full capacity in just over an hour thanks to an available fast-charging connection. And it still does a wonderful job of just being a car; it offers active safety features, a spacious cabin, generous storage, and plenty of tech features. All in all, it is a groundbreaking vehicle in the quest for freedom from over-dependence on combustion engines. Still in its infancy, Chevrolet did not see the need for many tweaks. Nevertheless, Chevy adds revised sliding visors for better sunlight protection and an automatic heated steering wheel to replace the previous year's manual one.

2018 Bolt Trims & Features

The 2018 Chevy Bolt EV is a four-door hatchback that is available in two trim specifications: the LT and the Premier. The Bolt LT features 17-inch alloy wheels with self-sealing tires, power adjustable heated outside mirrors, HID headlights, keyless entry, a push-to-start button, automatic climate control, power door locks, power windows, and the Teen Driver feature. Tech gadgets and apps include an 8-inch driver information center, a 6-speaker audio system, a 10.2-inch color touchscreen, dual USB ports, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, OnStar with 4G LTE Wi-Fi, the Chevrolet MyLink system, remote start, and Bluetooth. Options for the LT fit into two packages. The first is the Comfort and Convenience Package which adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel. The second bundle, the Driver Confidence Package, brings forth lane-departure warning, side blind spot warning, rear parking sensors, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Bolt Premier carries all of the LT's standard paraphernalia plus upgraded 17-in wheels, leather seating, heated outboard rear seats, roof rails, a back seat armrest, ambient lighting, and Surround Vision 360-degree camera. A 7-speaker Bose audio upgrade, rear-seat dual USB ports, and a wireless charging pad are options for the Premier.

Horsepower

2018 Chevrolet Bolt FrontThe 2018 Chevy Bolt is a purely electric car and, therefore, does not employ an internal-combustion engine. It is motivated by a robust electric motor producing an incredible 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. A 60-kilowatt lithium-ion battery pack stores enough to electricity to drive the 2018 Bolt EV to up to 238 miles on a single charge. That is made possible by the two regenerative onboard charging systems. The first mode is what you will find in most hybrids and recaptures the energy generated during braking. The second, dubbed Regen on Demand, allows the driver to initiate regeneration using a steering-wheel-mounted paddle. A standardized 240-volt charging system fills the battery in about 9.3 hours. An optional DC fast-charging system charges the battery to 80-percent in a little north of an hour.

Chevrolet Bolt Safety

2018 Chevrolet Bolt RearA 10-airbag system complete with driver and passenger front-knee airbags and side-curtain airbags is available standard on all Bolt EV models. Cruise control and a rear-vision camera are also complementary equipment. The Driver Confidence package adds automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, and pedestrian detection braking. The 2018 Chevy Bolt EV is a recipient of the IIHS' highest possible rating of "Good" in Driver's Side Small Overlap, Moderate Overlap, Side Impact, Roof Strength, and Head Restraints tests. IIHS also considers it a Top Safety Pick+. NHTSA's ratings are not out yet, but the 2018 Bolt is expected to perform as well as its predecessor.
